It certainly happens when either or both parties are looking for something other than a delight in being in their company. Romantic relationships are fraught and fragile with a huge range of background requirements for many people — from having someone to spend time with on the weekends/public holidays to having a family, growing a life together. The expectations, even when stated, are often unrealistic and when not stated, become a minefield. One of the strangest expectations is that the other person will somehow change, sometimes completely. How is it possible to fall in love with someone and then want them to change? I can understand wanting to know a person more fully, can understand wanting to give and receive trust, but to say ‘I love you’ and think that will somehow remove core personality traits…? That I don’t understand :S
