I’ve been shocked to learn many people don’t listen to lyrics of songs, or can’t recognise a few notes of very well-known (I thought) compositions. I grew up in a home where music was listened to as an activity and it was a constant part of my life. My father’s appreciation of classical, romantic, baroque and opera and his attention to the notes, to the instruments, to the interpretation and production of the pieces meant I learned to listen…or maybe to hear. It’s not as common as I’d thought.
