My bafflement arises from the idea that anyone would consider such people their peers, in a social sense. Do people feel they must socialise with those whose interests, attitudes and opinions do not inspire, challenge or even mesh with their own simply because — what? They’re the same age? The same gender? Working in the same building? That would be a trap, like being forced to live in high school forever. As an adult, finding those who resonate, from whom we can learn, or just enjoy being with is the goal, isn’t it? Finding friends to suit the lives we are steering ourselves?
