That's true, Jeff, but the reason it's singular is that the author can communicate - clearly, articulately and with full meaning - in a world where the ability and skills of communication are rapidly and exponentially going the way of the dodo. What you're witnessing are lights shining brighter for the encroaching darkness.

That's not to say that celebrating and lifting up those lights is not a very worthy use of your time. But dig deeper, look further as well?
