The intention was clear and the execution was first class, the reading flowed well. I guess I was looking for less discussion by the animals and more weight to the actions of the hunter — he states he’d never caught a coyote and seemed to be living off the bunnies so why would the deer, pheasants etc get involved.

Sigh. I have too much time on my hands :)
