The problem is you've misinterpreted the advice completely, despite managing to write it out correctly - at heart, the experiences and emotions of the writer are needed for substance. NOT the actual events whatever they may be but the experience in dealing with it, the reactions to it, the lessons learned from it. If you're writing fiction, or even creative nonfiction, those are what you bring to the table?
I have much respect for those who write without, at first, knowing what they want to say. It takes a lot of faith and hope to put down the words without a clear direction (for me, at any rate).
