There are two questions, really but both rely on percentages of population I’m not sure are available. The first, obviously, is about the money. Making money is the goal of most publishing exercises, traditional or self. That follows the largest numbers of readers of single genres around in the hopes of gaining their loyalty and interest.
The second relates to the books that are read continuously and broadly, across generations and demographics, that are more universal in their appeal and that no one appears to be able to predict. Are the readers of these novels — not the flash in the pan “best sellers”, but the novels (and nonfiction!) that are continuously in print — known by their number? Are they the readers of all genres who focus on well-written, high quality compared to cheap, available, fantasy-based?
For the goals of money-making, yes, bots can do it. Perhaps not indefinitely though that will depend on education departments around the globe. But they’ll learn to write many of the small Romance novels and possibly already are, and that makes money right now.
For the rest? I don’t think so :)
