When the ability to discern the difference quality makes is lost, only lowest common denominator applies. For 98% that will mean cost. Because they cannot make an assessment on why — for example — solid timber is more long-lasting and easier to maintain than chipboard with a woodgrain-look vinyl covering. They have no knowledge and more importantly, no interest in gaining knowledge to help them assess. Instant gratification takes too long, as as the dearly missed Ms Fisher once said.
